The Starfish Door Knocker was designed by Michael Healy, an accomplished Rhode Island artisan. The door knocker is cast in solid nickel. Nickel Silver is an alloy that has a warm silver color which is attained by adding nickel to bronze. Michael combines a high polished finish with brushed accents to generate a contemporary look. A stainless steel brush on a high speed lathe is used to create the brushed effects. The mirrored finish of polished nickel silver is achieved through varying degrees of sanding and buffing. Michael uses these techniques to highlight or accent the raised areas on a piece. Michael grew up on Cape Cod and has happy memories of his youth spent combing the shoreline. What a thrill it was to occasionally find the starfish clinging to a rock jetty in Cape Cod Bay. The tenacity of the starfish has been recognized since ancient times and has led to its use as a symbol of everlasting love. What better symbol to be displayed as a knocker on your door.
All Michael Healy Door Knockers and Doorbell Ringers are cast in Solid Brass, Bronze, or Nickel Silver. Occasionally, a combination of these metals is used to add highlights and depth to a particular design.
Michael's original Door Knockers were cast in solid brass and bronze. In response to the expansion of both antique and contemporary finishes used in door hardware, the line was recently expanded to include Oiled Bronze and Nickel Silver designs.
Each Door Knocker receives a baked polyurethane coating or a statuary lacquer before leaving production. Similar to the protective finish used on cars, these coatings provide a shield against the elements. All of the alloys used by Michael Healy are ideal for outdoor use, allowing you to base your selection on personal preference alone.
