How Gable Vents Work
Gable vents are a type of ventilation system that is used in attics to help circulate air. Gable vents are typically installed on the exterior wall of a building near the peak or roof. This allows hot air to escape from the attic, and cool air to be drawn in through the open louvers. Why is ventilation important? Proper ventilation helps prevent moisture buildup, mold, and rot, which can lead to structural damage.
How Big Of A Gable Vent Do I Need
First, determine the square footage of the space that needs ventilation. The attic area is equal to the length times the width. To meet guidelines, you must meet the net free area (NFA) requirement for your home. For every square foot of NFA, you need 150 square feet of attic floor space. If the attic has both intake and exhaust vents, the ratio can be 1 square foot of NFA for every 300 square feet of attic floor space. Once you know the size of your attic and have calculated the NFA square footage needed, find a vent that compliments your style and size requirements for your home.
Louver Box Vs Surface Mount
Both PVC and real wood gable vents come with optional boxes that have aluminum screens to keep out pests and debris. Louver boxes provide better ventilation because they give the louvers more space for air to flow through. However, if you are combining this ventilation system with another one or if you want to add decorative elements to your home, surface mounts are easier to install and can be either functional or non-functional.
Functional Vs Non-Functional
Functional vents have open louvers that allow air to flow through the ventilated area. While functional louvers are not adjustable, gable vents are made with meticulous precision to allow the proper amount of airflow. To further increase ventilation, consider functional vents with louver boxes, such as our real wood or PVC options. Decorative vents have closed louvers and are ideal for adding unique designs to any home, potentially increasing its perceived value.
