While wood crown moulding is a timeless and durable choice for adding elegance to any space, following this care guide will help keep your moulding looking as beautiful as the day it was installed.

Recommended Maintenance

Wood crown moulding is designed to last, but periodic care will ensure it remains in peak condition. In most cases, routine dusting will suffice. However, in areas where dust, moisture, or grime build up, the following procedures are recommended to maintain your moulding's finish.

Light Dirt or Dust

We recommend occasional dusting using a soft, dry cloth or a microfiber duster. For more thorough cleaning, gently wipe the surface with a damp, lint-free cloth. Be sure to avoid excessive moisture to protect the wood’s natural finish.

Heavier Dirt and Grime

For areas that accumulate more dirt, especially in kitchens or bathrooms, clean your moulding with a solution of:

• 1/4 cup mild dish soap (Dawn®, for example)
• 1 quart warm water

Use a soft cloth or sponge to gently wipe the surface, followed by wiping with a dry cloth to remove any residual moisture. Always avoid abrasive cleaning tools, as they can scratch the wood or remove the finish.

Stubborn Stains or Substances

For harder-to-remove substances like grease, tar, or caulking compounds, apply a small amount of mineral spirits on a soft cloth and rub the affected area lightly. Follow immediately by wiping with a damp cloth and drying with a clean towel.

Keeping It Fresh

Inspect your wood crown moulding annually for any signs of wear, fading, or damage to the finish. Minor imperfections or scratches can be touched up using wood-safe paint or stain that matches your moulding. We recommend applying a wood conditioner or polish once every 2-3 years to enhance the wood's natural luster and protect against environmental factors.

Applying a Wood Conditioner

For best results, use a wood conditioner designed for interior trim. Apply evenly with a soft cloth, following the wood grain, and allow it to absorb for the recommended time. Buff with a clean, dry cloth for a polished finish.

Caution

Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive sponges, or excessive water, as these can damage the wood surface or finish. Always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area before applying it to larger sections of the moulding.
